After a jury has cut the flood of music down to five scores, the semi finalists will then be able to choose among the remaining pieces themselves. This serves the purpose of encouraging composers to keep the instrumentalists in mind, as the foundation explained: „While the initiative provides exposure to the work of American composers, it also underscores the importance of creating music that appeals to performers.“ Only those composers, whose work has been chosen for a semi finale rendition at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be awarded a cheque and follow in the footsteps of previous winners Lowell Liebermann and Sebastian Currier. For composers interested in entering the competition, the deadline for submiting material is 15th December 2008 and Pianists will start selecting their favourites in March of 2009.
The Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be held May 22-June 7, 2009, at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas.
