Chanticleer, hailed by some as the "World's reigning male chorus", have set
out to futher examin the life and times of one of the Middle Age's most
inspiring persona: Hildegard von Bingen. Initially a non without a call (it
was a custom at the time that the tenth child of every family was to be sent
to a monastery), von Bingen turned out to be one of the most influential and
talented poets, songwriters and mysticists. She reached fame before her
death and was subsequently declared a saint. The story of "Hildegard: A
measure of joy" starts at with her death and gives the audience a rerun of
her life, leading to the question where a mere good life ends and sanctitude
begins. The music is said to include pieces by von Bingen and
contemporaries, as well as two specially comissioned pieces. You can watch
all of this in four major American cities, starting June, third in San
Francisco.
