Ok, don't accuse of this quote, we stole it from the Village Voice.
But after a longer period of relative silence, the world is indeed turning
its eyes to Steve Reich again. March 17th saw a party at the Club Redux in
Berlin, which featured a concert by the Redux-Orchestra playing cut-up tapes
and samples by the American. This marked already the second attempt of
popularising Reichs music among Techno-fans, after a remix-CD a few years
ago. And two new albums are also warranting attention: The So Percussion
Ensemble releases "Drumming", possibly the most famous Reich-composition, on
Cantaloupe Music. The nine percussion parts are performed by the group's
individual members, who are joined by singers of Steve Reich's own ensemble.
Furthermore, "Different Trains" has been re-recorded and bundled with an
older ("The Four Sections") and a new composition ("Triple Quartet"). Both
CDs have already received quite an extraordinary amount of positive reviews
and Reich has extensively praised "Drumming". So use your chance to check
out the world of - granted - "one of America's Greatest living composers"
(and you can quote us on that).
