In a recent article on King FM, we already mentioned that something was
going on in the world of Classical radio. Our suppositions were proven right
when Klassik Radio announced that Thomas Prüsse will take over as new head
of Merchandising at the station. Klassik Radio is Germany's biggest private
broadcaster with a potential listener base of over 36 Million (not counting
the Internet, where one can stream their programme as well). They already
feature a range of CDs, including titles such as "Klassik Lounge" and "New
Classics". Now, Prüsser wants to extend the shop and build an innovative
mail order system, which is to make Klassik Radio the number one among its
core target group. The move is also a further step into independence from
advertising revenues, which are subject to heavy fluctuations.
It is becoming more and more obvious that underneath the traditional surface of Classical music, new and powerful players are emerging which may change the face of the business.
