As every year, the listeners of Classic FM - arguably the most important
radio station on Classical Music in Europe - have decided on their
favourites. The Top three sees Rachmaninovs Piano Concerto No2 take top spot
for a fifth consecutive year, in front of Vaughan Williams' "The lark
Ascending" and Mozarts Clarinet Concerto in A. Apparently, Rach 2s
popularity has everything to do with its use in the movie Brief Encounter,
which seems to be a gem on the isle, while yours truly hasn't actually heard
of it (Shame on me, I know!). Unsurprisingly, good old Sergej drops behind
quite a bit, when it comes to the overall Composers Chart. Here, Mozart
leads Beethoven by a close 21 to 19 total entries, leaving Tchaikovsky (13)
and Bach (12) far behind.
The Top 10 looks like this:
01 Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor
02 Vaughan Williams: The Lark Ascending
03 Mozart: Clarinet Concerto in A
04 Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb (The Emperor)
05 Bruch: Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor
06 Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 Pastoral
07 Elgar: Cello Concerto in E minor
08 Elgar: Enigma Variations
09 Jenkins Karl: The Armed Man (A Mass for Peace)
10 Grieg: Piano Concerto in A minor
