„The most important thing is that it must have a immediate emotional effect on people. Not only like a masterpiece from the past... Every phrase, every screening or every happy moment should be lived through as though it were lived through in our real live“, Mikhail Pletnev stressed, explaining why his Beethoven tribute may actually have profited from the urgency and immediacy of the moment.
It will be especially interesting to see Mikhail Pletnev work out the details of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 5. This piece, after all, completed a development started with his third Concerto and really put him in a league of his own. The uncompromising nature of the music certainly turned it into a point of discussion right from the very moment it was premiered in Vienna in 1809.
Up to now, the previous installments of the cycle have been praised by some of the leading papers and magazines in the world. Effectively, they have reinforced Mikhail Pletnev's position as one of the outstanding Beethoven-interpretors of our time. Among others, his CD with the second and fourth Piano Concerto has been honoured with the prestigious Japanese „Record Academy Award".
