At still only 22, Mayuko Kamio can already look back on an impressive career plastered with awards and distinctions, which was sparked by her first public appearances in Tokyo at the age of ten. In 2004, Kamio went on to claim victory at the first Monte Carlo Violin Masters Competition and shot to worldwide attention when she triumphed at the 13th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, one of the scene’s most coveted medals. Her steady artistic progress has been accompanied by continued medial interest, among others securing her a seminal role in Josh Aronson documentary “Playing for Real”, which dealt with the difficulties of “making it” as a classical musician.
Whatever resistance there may have been quickly crumbled after a couple of American gigs, which saw the aforementioned rave reception by the New York Times, attesting Mayuko Kamio a “warmly luxurious, buttery tone and long, seemless phrases”. Her current repertoire encompasses Bach and Beethoven as well as Glazunov and Wieniawski. In this respect, “In Recital”, with its reckless charges between the supposedly “old” and the so-called “modern” is a perfect exemplification of what to expect of one of her concerts.
