While Li Jianhong has been one of the first Chinese musicians to establish himself as a regular guest at international festivals and events, his influence on the domestic Chinese market for experimental music and noise has possibly been even more important. Thanks to his 2pi label and the accompanying 2pi Festival, as well as the “Household Violence” series, he has been seminally influential in reaching new audiences for the scene as a whole.
Over the years, Li Jianhong has always dabbled his feet in different genres, never resting on his laurels as an extreme purveyor of Guitar drones. His 2005/2006 album “Ghost Temple” already established a dialogue with Free Improv and Jazz – a tendency reinforced by the upcoming concert with Li Zenghui. Jianhong’s latest solo effort “San Sheng Shi”, meanwhile, emphasises his love for hazy sludge Rock – which has caused the organisors of his recent performances to refer to him as a master of “any space with stoned crowds”.
