Andrew Liles: CDs stolen/Nurse with Wound/Fovea Hex
Tobias
Andrew Liles has unveiled the reason behind the belated arrival of “Black Out”, his latest contribution to the “Vortex Vault” series: After the CDs had experienced difficulties at British customs, the entire package was sent back to the USA and then... stolen! The issue has now been resolved according to Andrew Liles, which means that both “Black Out” and its follow.up “Black Panther” will be sent to subscibers simultaneously. “Black Out” features contributions by Freek and Miranda Kinkelaar and has a Dutch taste to it, with the Kinkelaars presenting Spoken Word passages, which either serve as a basis for the music or stand on their own amidst eclectically arranged works in between drones and colourful sound art. We gladly took the opportunity offered by Andrew Liles and Betal Lactam Ring Records to listen at a couple of samples on the label site and must say that the record sounds every bit as eccentric as promised – one of the tracks has Freek Kinkelaar reading poetry about a centipede, while others sees his and Miranda’s voice tumble over each other like those of madmen. “Black Panther”, meanwhile, is a collection of 22 tracks (simply titled “track 1” . “track 22”) for which Andrew Liles has invited over a couple of friends such as Joolie Wood, Clay Young, Wolfgang Weiss, Freida Abtan and Agnes Ladanyi. The music ranges from operatic arias to recorder solos and generally has a bit of a medieval and classical touch to it. And then there is the new Nurse with Wound album, of course, as well as first signs of a co-operation with Clodagh Simonds’ Fovea Hex.
For the new Nurse with Wound work, Andrew Liles has been locking himself in the studio with Steven Stapleton for almost two years. After several title changes, its current name is “Huffin' Rag Blues”, but don’t take our word it will stay so until it is being shipped to stores in late 2007. Again, a lot of collaborators have made their appearance on “Huffin' Rag Blues”, including Lynn Jackson, Frieda Abtan, Matt Waldron, Colin Potter, Petr Vastl, Diana Rogerson and others. Nothing precise is known about the direction Nurse with Wound are taking on this one, but Andrew Liles has promised it to be “something very very special” after it has “evolved, dissolved and resolved” many times.
Finally, Janet Records, home to Fovea Hex, have made it be known that Fovea Hex are definitely working on material with Andrew Liles. “All Whys Whens and Wherefores are indefinitely suspended”, Magdalena Daley of Janet Records has admitted, but she is quick to follow this up with a reassuring message: “They're up to something, those two". The collaboration certainly does not come falling from the sky, as the three Fovea Hex EPs from this and last year have featured Colin Potter – a longtime musical companion of Andrew Liles.
